This spring, Snow Hill High School's Engineering Club as part of Academy 100 Afterschool Program, came together to replace an old ramp for Snow Hill community member. The team is led by Mrs. Kosin, Snow Hill High School's 2018 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Kosin and her team partnered with the Chesapeake Housing Mission. With the guidance of Mrs. Kosin and the leaders from the nonprofit organization, students came out despite the nasty weather to remove an old ramp that was not up to building codes and replace it with a brand new one.

The students learned as they helped their neighbor, whom is bound to using a motorized wheel chair to access his home. Building a wheelchair ramp includes many responsibilities including designing the ramp, surveying the site and dealing with space limitations and obstacles, obtaining necessary permits, ordering materials, and ultimately construction. This is why the afterschool club’s partnership with the Chesapeake House Mission was so crucial. We couldn't be more proud of the team and the partnership they built to serve the Snow Hill Community.

The SHHS Academy 100 Afterschool program is funded through a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. You can support local afterschool programs like this through volunteerism, advocacy and in-kind donations.
