Newark, MD, October 3, 2022 – Worcester County Public Schools is proud to announce that Berlin Intermediate School (BIS) has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished
School for 2022–2025 for utilizing technology to enhance instruction while creating meaningful, real world learning opportunities for students.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. They use Apple technology to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in learning, teaching, and the school environment, and have documented results of academic accomplishment.
“At Berlin Intermediate School, we strive to provide a rigorous educational program for all students that is sensitive to individual needs.” Amy Gallagher, Ed. D., principal of BIS. “Technology should always enhance our efforts to personalize learning and engage students with the curriculum.”

The selection of BIS as an Apple Distinguished School highlights the school’s success as an innovator and a compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic achievement. The school’s use of experiential and experimental learning models, supported by the school system’s investment in Apple technology, has amplified both student voice and student ownership of their own learning. The daily use of iPads® has empowered teachers to demonstrate and create, showcase, and ultimately inspire their students. Student use of the iPad® has unlocked creativity for creation, collaboration, and communication with their peers, their teachers, and the world around them.

“We are incredibly proud that the innovative learning practices at Berlin Intermediate School has garnered this national recognition,” Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor said. “As I look back on the investment that our Board of Education, County Commissioners, and our community have made to ensure our schools are outfitted with advanced instructional technology to enhance and create new learning opportunities for students, today’s announcement is a demonstration of how sound this continued focus and investment truly is.”

The three-year designation of being an Apple Distinguished School comes with the expectations that Berlin Intermediate School will continuously innovate and explore cutting-edge opportunities for using technology to design the future of education.
Students and staff will be able to engage with the Apple Education team, along with a worldwide network of school leaders, to investigate and support the integration of new education products, curriculum, and services and inspire others. BIS will have the opportunity to renew the recognition in 2025, by demonstrating continued growth in innovative learning with integrated technology.
