Saturday, January 14th- Principal Jenifer Rayne was awarded the Human and Civil Rights Award at the Maryland State Education Association’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and Racial Social Justice Summit in Baltimore, MD for her efforts with Speak Up, a club dedicated to elevating student voice.

The Human and Civil Rights Award is awarded to educators who contribute significantly in the area of human and civil rights in the classroom or the overall school culture in Maryland Public Schools. Rayne co-sponsors Speak Up, a club that explores the rich, diverse history and culture of all marginalized populations including women, immigrants, refugees, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA community. Since its inception in 2017-2018, Rayne’s first year as principal, Speak Up has worked with school administration to ensure students have a voice in administrative policy decisions.

In her acceptance speech, principal Rayne asked educators to “use their privilege to speak out against injustice wherever they may see it.” Rayne was nominated for the award by seniors of the 2021-2022 class.
