Sticking with our exploration of African Americans and Labor, today we’re celebrating Benjamin Banneker, a brilliant self-taught mathematician, astronomer, surveyor and inventor. He is best known for his almanacs, which contained astronomical calculations, weather predictions, and other useful information. Banneker was appointed as part of the surveying team to help design Washington, D.C. He worked alongside Pierre Charles L’Enfant and Andrew Ellicott, contributing his expertise in mapping and land measurement. When L’Enfant abruptly left the project, Banneker reportedly recreated the city’s plans from memory.
Despite limited formal education, he excelled in science and engineering, even building a working wooden clock that kept accurate time for decades. He was also an outspoken advocate against slavery, writing to Thomas Jefferson to challenge his views on race and equality.

Building on our theme of African Americans and Labor, Lewis Latimer was an inventor, engineer, and draftsman who made significant contributions to the development of the light bulb and telephone. Born to formerly enslaved parents, Latimer worked with some of the greatest inventors of his time. He improved carbon filament technology, making light bulbs more practical and longer-lasting. He also worked closely with Alexander Graham Bell, helping draft the patent for the telephone. Later, he joined Thomas Edison's team and played a key role in expanding electric lighting.
Beyond inventions, Latimer was a patent expert, author, and advocate for Black engineers, leaving a lasting impact on technology and innovation.

Carrying on with our exploration of African Americans and Labor, Dr. Charles Drew was an African American physician, surgeon, and medical researcher best known for his groundbreaking work in blood banking and transfusion medicine. He developed innovative methods for collecting, storing, and preserving blood plasma, which became crucial during World War II for saving countless lives. Drew also helped establish large-scale blood banks, including the American Red Cross Blood Program.
Despite his contributions, he resigned from the Red Cross in protest when they imposed racial segregation on blood donations, a policy he strongly opposed as unscientific and discriminatory. As a mentor and educator, Drew also became the first African American to earn a Doctor of Medical Science degree from Columbia University and played a vital role in training Black surgeons at Howard University. His work laid the foundation for modern blood donation and transfusion practices.

Moving forward with our exploration of African Americans and Labor, unveiling today is Lonnie Johnson, an inventor, aerospace engineer, and entrepreneur best known for creating the Super Soaker, one of the best-selling water toys of all time. Originally called the “Power Drencher,” Johnson accidentally invented the Super Soaker while working with the U.S. Air Force. A former NASA engineer, he also contributed to the Galileo and Cassini space missions. He holds over 100 patents and has worked on advanced energy technology, including solid-state batteries and thermoelectric energy conversion.
