Newark, MD, August 26, 2025– Today, the Maryland State Department of Education released statewide performance data with Worcester County Public Schools outperforming all school systems in the State in both Mathematics and English/Language Arts.
During the State Board of Education meeting, State Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright and staff provided an update on student performance on state assessments administered in spring 2025 in English/Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Statewide, assessment results showed Maryland’s students experienced steady progress in both ELA and mathematics.
Worcester County student performance on the spring ELA assessments continued to top all other school systems in Maryland with 68.5 percent of students scoring as proficient or higher, nearly 18 percentage points above the state average of 50.8 percent. (See Figure 1.) Seventh grade proficiency in ELA grew at every school across the county, with Pocomoke Middle School standing out with a nearly 8.5 percentage point increase over the 2024 administration.
Statewide, mathematics performance data saw a nominal gain over last year with 26.5 percent of Maryland’s students reaching proficiency across all tested areas. Worcester County topped the State by over 21 percentage points in mathematics with 47.7 percent of students reaching proficiency across all assessments. (See Figure 2.) Worcester also saw an over eight percentage point increase in mathematics across all assessments over 2024 results. A particular highlight are Worcester County’s middle school aged students who tested in spring 2025. Countywide, seventh and eighth graders’ mathematics proficiency grew across all schools; Snow Hill Middle School’s (SHMS) seventh and eighth graders saw some of the strongest gains with seventh graders’ proficiency rising 10.5 percentage points and eighth graders’ proficiency soaring over 20 percentage points over the 2024 administration.
“We are proud to celebrate our students, educators, and families for leading the state in both English/Language Arts and Mathematics,” said Dr. Annette Wallace, Superintendent of Worcester County Public Schools. “These results are a testament to the incredible dedication within our schools, but we know our work is not finished until every single child reaches proficiency. It’s my hope that by knowing every student by name, strength, and need, we will build on this momentum and move even closer to that goal.”
