Last week, students from Pocomoke, Stephen Decatur, and Snow Hill High Schools came together for the second annual WETLANDS (Worcester Environmental Training, Leadership, and Stewardship) Fall Student Retreat, part of a four-year partnership fully funded and sponsored by the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. Since its start, 56 students have participated in WETLANDS, with a new cohort of freshmen selected each spring.

At this fall's retreat, students in grades 10–12 engaged with the local environment near the Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center through seining, phytoplankton monitoring, and trail restoration, then stayed overnight at the Horn Point Environmental Education Center in Cambridge. There they took part in environmental career exploration, leadership and STEM activities, and time around the campfire—building skills in science, stewardship, and teamwork while connecting across grade levels and schools.

A special thank you to our partners at the Maryland Coastal Bays Program for their continued collaboration and support! #WCPSEnvironmentalLiteracy

Pocomoke High School celebrated the grand opening of its community garden last night! Guests enjoyed fresh food samples made on site, participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and even harvested produce from the garden beds. The event also revealed the garden’s name, chosen by community vote — Warrior Roots. A huge thank you to UMES Extension 4-H, UMD Extension, and the Worcester County Health Department for partnering with PHS to make this initiative possible. #PartnershipsInAction #WeAreWorcester

Over the past few weeks, Worcester County fifth graders stepped outside the classroom to spend two days of outdoor learning at Pocomoke River State Park: Shad Landing. Last week marked the final trips of the fall season!

Students explored part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed through canoeing, fishing, pond study, forest exploration, and more. These hands-on experiences gave students meaningful opportunities to connect with the natural world in lasting ways.

A big thank you to our partners at Pocomoke River State Park and the staff at Shad Landing for making this experience possible. These photos are just a glimpse of the fun and discovery that took place! #WeAreWorcester #WCPSEnvironmentalLiteracy

They participated in sessions to learn about to help their peers make healthy decisions. Thanks to our health dept friends and supporters, as well as the Salisbury University health communications majors who came and presented to the SADD groups.
